The Sacred Land of Easter Eggs
In The Sacred Land of Easter Eggs, Kobra Khan and the Snake Men return to a forbidden meadow for one thing—eggs. Despite a warning from the Easter Bunny himself, temptation proves too strong… and this time, a guardian is ready.
The Forbidden Meadow
Kobra Khan knew the meadow was forbidden.
The sign had been there last year, nailed to a crooked stump in glittery pink letters:

BY DECREE OF THE EASTER BUNNY:
TOUCH NOT THE SACRED EGGS.
The Easter Bunny himself had warned them that the field was sacred, its colorful eggs protected by ancient spring law, fluffy decree, and consequences “most severe.”
Naturally, this year they came back with baskets. Kobra Khan led a “completely innocent spring walk” straight back to the same meadow with Viper and Scales, along with his personal guard Varnakk, each carrying baskets and absolutely no shame at all.
At first, it was a miracle. Eggs were everywhere, scattered through the grass like jewels from some pastel treasure vault. Blue eggs. Yellow eggs. Pink eggs. Eggs tucked in the grass like buried treasure from a very cheerful empire. Varnakk stared into his basket with scholarly awe, already calculating how many ceremonial omelets could be made from such a haul. Viper bent to collect another egg, pleased with himself.
Then Scales found the biggest cluster yet and shouted, “Kobra! We’ve struck a gold mine!”
The Guardian Appears
That was when a small figure stepped from the grass.
Standing in the grass ahead of them was a very small rabbit. Usagi Yojimbo. He wore a kimono and carried himself with perfect calm. At his side rested a sword. He looked, at a glance, less like a threat and more like someone who should be serving tea under a cherry blossom tree.
Usagi Yojimbo, samurai of the sacred meadow, gave them one quiet look. Calm. Silent. Judging them with the full weight of rabbit law.
“You were warned last year not to return,” he said.
Kobra Khan turned sharply. Viper froze. Varnakk slowly lowered his basket.
Scales, however, puffed out his chest, pointed, and laughed.
“That’s the guardian? He’s adorable. Look at him! What’s he going to do, nibble our ankles? Lecture us with politeness? Be unbearably precious?”
Usagi did not react.
Scales leaned in further and, fully committed to his own destruction, scratched Usagi’s cute fluffy face. “You’re the cutest little warning sign I’ve ever seen.”
Usagi closed his eyes for one brief, disappointed moment and let out a sigh of someone who had truly hoped not to reach this part of the conversation.
The Cost of Ignoring the Warning
Then he lifted one paw and said, very calmly, “Very well…”
The earth trembled and the trees shivered. From beyond the meadow came a roar so enormous it seemed to punch the air itself in the face. Maulora, Guardian of the Sacred Land of Easter Eggs, thundered forward with spring-loaded jaws of doom and the soul of an unpaid security officer.
Scales shrieked and bolted.
Maulora lunged.
CHOMP.
She missed him by a breath, her teeth snapping shut so close behind him that Scales yelped mid-sprint and nearly threw himself out of his own scales.
Scales sprinted wildly through the grass as Maulora charged after him with the unstoppable fury of ancient reptilian justice.
The scream tore across the meadow with such force that even Kobra Khan whipped around in alarm. Viper spun at once. Varnakk stared at his basket, then at the dinosaur, then back at the basket, as if weighing very difficult priorities.

“RUN!” he screamed, legs pumping in wild, undignified terror. “IT’S AN APEX PREDATOR! OH GODS! WE’RE ALL DEAD!”
Kobra Khan did not need to be told twice. “Retreat!” he barked.
“But the eggs!” said Varnakk.
“ABANDON THE EGGS!” Kobra Khan shouted.
Varnakk looked heartbroken, but only for a moment, because Maulora roared again and that settled the matter.
And so the Snake Men fled in total chaos, baskets swinging, dignity in ruins, while Scales tore across the meadow with Maulora chomping at his heels and screaming loud enough to alarm wildlife in neighboring counties.
Usagi Yojimbo remained where he stood, small, composed, and innocent-looking as ever.
He adjusted his stance, watched the egg thieves vanish into the woods, and said softly to no one in particular with a small grin, “They were warned.”
Behind him, the sacred meadow of Easter Eggs was safe once again.
Mostly because Scales had done the running for everyone.
At least until next Easter.
A Lesson Learned (Maybe)
Because far off in the woods, while gasping for breath and covered in grass, Scales wheezed, “Next year, when I see a cute bunny, I’m assuming it has an apex predator in customer service.”
